"Dance with My Male parent" is the RIAA Gilt-certified title track to singer and songwriter Luther Vandross' 13th studio album. With Richard Marx, Vandross wrote the vocal based on his personal experience. The lyrics remember childhood memories with Vandross' begetter, who used to dance with him and his mother.
Despite the lack of promotion due in role to Vandross' hospitalization, "Dance with My Begetter" became one of the most requested songs at the time. During the 2004 Grammy Awards, "Dance with My Father" earned Vandross the Song of the Year and All-time Male R&B Vocal Performance accolades.
Composition and release [edit]
Vandross wrote "Dance with My Father" with Marx, based on his personal experience. Considered by Vandross every bit his "career song",[ane] "Dance with my Father" is a tribute to his begetter, Luther Vandross, Sr., who died due to complications of diabetes. Vandross was seven when his father died. Co-ordinate to Marx, writing the vocal was emotional for Vandross considering it is "a subject field affair [Vandross] hadn't written earlier".[ii]
Vandross wrote "Trip the light fantastic with My Father" with Richard Marx.
On the backdrop of strings and interplay of pianoforte and drums,[3] Vandross recalls fond memories with his late begetter who used to trip the light fantastic with his mother. Mary Ida, his female parent, says, "I was amazed at how well Luther remembered his male parent, how nosotros used to trip the light fantastic toe and sing in the house. I was then surprised that at 7+ 1⁄two years of age, he could retrieve what a happy household we had."[4] Barry Walters of Rolling Stone magazine qualifies the memories invoked in the lyrics equally painful and private, calculation that when Vandross asks God to return his begetter, it "turn a potentially maudlin song into a meditative, deeply personal prayer".[5]

Although Vandross was unable to promote the latest projection, "Dance with My Male parent" was able to reach number i on music stations. For instance, it achieved top position in WLTW, which was one of the get-go stations in the Usa to play the runway. Before his stroke, Vandross wrote to WLTW's programme managing director, informing him of what he considered to be his "career vocal".[seven] The director asked permission from the characterization, but information technology was not until after the hospitalization that J Records permitted the airplay, following the song being featured in Boston Public on April 28, 2003. "Dance with My Male parent" became one of the most requested songs at the time, spawning "a number of weepy phone calls and requests".[vii]
In February 2004, "Dance with My Father" earned Vandross and Marx a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Vandross a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Marx accepted the accolade on behalf of Vandross, who was unable to attend due to health concerns. At the same effect, vocalist Celine Dion agreed to perform a live rendition of the song in lieu of Vandross, and Marx accompanied her on the piano equally she recently lost her father.[eight] Afterward the functioning, Vandross all the same accepted the awards on a videotaped spoken communication.[9]
With his death in 2005, "Dance with My Father" was the terminal meridian 40 hit for Luther Vandross in the United states, peaking at number 38. The song also peaked at 21 in the UK Singles Chart. On August 29, 2009, the song re-entered the UK acme 40 after a performance of the song on The X Factor by Joe McElderry.

While Vandross was hospitalized, a music video was shot for the unmarried. Hosting famous friends of his and fans alike, the clip features musicians, singers, actors and sport stars. The video features childhood snapshots of Vandross.[x]

"Trip the light fantastic with My Male parent" has been released in various cover versions, appearing on many albums and music media formats.
- Released in 2004, country music singer Kellie Coffey peaked at No. 41 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts with her cover version; the song was to be included on a planned 2d studio album, A Little More Me, which ultimately went unreleased due to the single'south underperformance.
- The 2005 diverse artists album And so Astonishing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross features a cover version by Canadian singer Celine Dion, Her version is included on her greatest hits albums My Love: Ultimate Essential Drove (2008) and on The Essential Celine Dion (2011).
- American Idol Flavor 11 top-contestants Jacob Lusk (Summit vii) and Jessica Sanchez (Top 6) each performed the song alive.
- American singer, songwriter, and role player Luke James, as his character Noah Brooks, performed the song on a 2018 Season 2 episode of Play a joke on television's musical drama series Star; a full recorded version was made bachelor as a digital download-but single.
- Vocal co-writer Richard Marx appears with YouTube star Joseph Vincent in an Apr 2011 YouTube-posted video recording of the song playing piano alongside Vincent's solo vocal; Marx later released his own orchestral version of the song exclusively at YouTube on June 10, 2018, making the song available equally a digital download-merely non-anthology unmarried.
